This is Beevor’s sign. (Video). Myopathies involving axial musculature can also produce a Beevor’s sign. It was first reported with FSH dystrophy (2-5). Beevor’s sign describes the upward movement of the umbilicus when performing either of these manoeuvres due to weakness of the lower part of the rectus abdominis (see Fig. 1). Or, less commonly, downward movement due to weak-ness of the upper part of the muscle (which might be called the inverted Beevor’s sign).

Beevor’s sign is characteristic of spinal cord injury between T9 and T10 levels. This occurs when the upper part of the rectus abdominis muscle is intact but the lower part is weak because of the spinal injury. Neurology.Neurology.2013 Jan 8;80(2):e20.

Beevor’s sign, an upward deflection of the umbilicus on flexion of the neck, is the result of paralysis of the inferior portion of the rectus abdominis muscle, so that the upper fibers predominate, pulling the umbilicus upwards. The condition may be caused by spinal cord injury at or below the level of Th10. It has also been observed in patients with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy

In the current study, we reinvestigated the significance of Beevor’s sign now that genetic analysis is readily available. In our study, 19 of the 20 FSH patients had a positive Beevor’s sign.

Testing for Beevor's sign is a simple screening test that may help in distinguishing FSHD from other forms of facioscapulohumeral syndrome. 2018-03-13 · Staunchly committed to the meticulous study of neuroanatomy and physiology and education of his fellow physicians, Beevor was an accomplished clinician-scientist.

Or, less SOME ANATOMY The rectus abdominis muscle is one of the anterior abdominal wall muscles, which together act to keep the viscera in place. If the lower abdominal muscles are paralyzed, as in a T10 myelopathy, the upper abdominal muscles will pull the umbilicus cephalad when the patient raises the head or attempts a sit-up (1). This is Beevor’s sign. (Video).
